Montserrat is an isle in the West Indies, an overseas territory of the U.K. It is located in the Lesser Antilles. In 1995 the Soufriere Hills volcano awoke, and is still active to date. Because of the explosions perpetually occurring since 1995, the capital of Montserrat is completely destroyed, along with causing 2/3 of the island to presently be uninhabitable. The left over 1/3 was hardly occupied before the eruptions, being much drier in vegetation and further away from the markets of Plymouth. The sites on island are overwhelming due to this living mountain.

Moving along though, the volcano brought more awareness to Montserrat but isn't what makes the isle special.

The people are warm and a friend from the first smile. The character of the island draws warmth, and I know not one person who did not fall in love with the feel of being on this island. With an Irish history, an African authenticity, a Carib draw, and a European thread, Montserrat stands proud, with rugged mountains erupting from the seafloor.

There is no feel quite as decadent as the emotion sensed when laying back into the presence of someone who grants you their total affection, and all their concern: This is a culture, a rhythm, a personality... a people.

Alliouagana, Montserrat. The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean.
