Montserrat's Summer Youth Programme is put together largely by Montserrat's Community Services Department (CSD). Each year, they host hundreds of young Montserratians between the ages of six and fifteen to learn a trade and keep fruitfully occupied during the summer months on this tiny Caribbean isle. The classes are taught between 8AM and 1PM, with variances each year. The classes are about one hour in duration.
What is taught:
If you have a craft or art that you can teach, pitch it to us, and that may become a NEW class. If it were something like guitar lessons, then we would have to donate guitars to the island. We can arrange this.
Drawing, Painting, Batik, Photography, Singing, Dancing, Gymnastics, Limericks, Basketball, Cricket, Fife, Steal Drum, Basket Weaving, and Leather Craft are just some examples of courses taught in the past.
Teachers:
Teachers who are experts in these arts will teach the courses. However, anyone can be an assistant: with large classes and spunky students, they are needed and we are very grateful for each assistant who volunteers.
Students:
Most of the students are Montserratian. However, there has been an influx in foreign population within the last ten years on Montserrat due largely to the economic affects of the volcano. You may find East Indians, Jamaicans, Guyanese, British, and Dominicans in your class as well.
